This page is a general GST invoice format guide for small businesses. It is not tax, accounting or legal advice. GST requirements can vary based on registration status, supply type, customer type, place of supply and future rule changes, so confirm final requirements with a qualified tax professional.

Common GST invoice fields

  • Supplier details: business name, address and GSTIN when registered.
  • Customer details: buyer name, address and GSTIN for registered business customers when required.
  • Invoice number and date: a unique invoice number and issue date.
  • Place of supply: useful for deciding tax treatment and records.
  • HSN or SAC: product or service classification where applicable.
  • Taxable value: amount before tax after discounts where applicable.
  • GST rate and amount: total GST percentage and tax amount.
  • CGST, SGST, UTGST or IGST: tax split details when applicable.
  • Total invoice value: final payable amount including tax.

CGST, SGST and IGST basics

In India, intra-state supplies generally use CGST plus SGST or UTGST, while inter-state supplies generally use IGST. For example, a total GST rate may be shown as a combined rate in a simple invoice tool, and the tax split can be written in notes when a separate component table is not available.

When to use a dedicated GST billing system

If your business needs component-level GST tables, e-invoice fields, HSN/SAC validation, return filing, automatic place-of-supply rules or accountant-ready tax reports, use a dedicated GST billing workflow or consult your accountant before sending documents.
